Broken water main floods home and creates sinkhole

Water main breaks, floods Hacienda Heights home and creates sinkhole

A broken water main flooded a home and created a sinkhole in a Hacienda Heights neighborhood Monday night.

It happened at about 6:30 p.m. when a resident called authorities to report a landslide. However, a broken 8-inch water main sent water, debris and mud down the hill — not a landslide. The water washed away some of the supporting soil under Edgeridge Drive, prompting crews to close the roadway.

Officials also closed parts of Avocado Terrace and Tamarix Drive because of the debris. Crews have shut off the water main but must still clear the mud that washed up on the roads. While Avocado Terrace and Tamarix will be reopened as soon as the debris is cleared, Edgeridge will require significant repairs before it is safe for driving.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said only one home was affected. So far, crews have not spotted any structural damage but mud and water did flow into the house.

The homeowners declined relocation services from the Red Cross.

Firefighters started to clear the mud off the roads to allow public works crews to pass through.
