Boy On Skateboard Critically Hurt After Being Run Down By Truck In Anaheim

ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — A 17-year-old boy on his way to classes at Gilbert High School in Anaheim Wednesday was critically injured after being mowed down by a truck.

The boy, who was on his skateboard, was on sidewalk on Ball Road near the corner of Hampstead Street when he was struck at about 8:47 a.m. by a truck apparently trying to make a U-turn.

Police say the truck's 64-year-old driver may have hit the gas by accident and hit the skateboarder on the sidewalk before crashing through a wall and flipping over.

The boy's leg was shattered and he is also experiencing heart issues, police said.

Conrad Brooks heard the crash and rushed over to help the boy.

"He was moaning and screaming," Brooks said.

Brooks also said when he tried to help the driver, the driver seemed disoriented and asked, "What happened, who hit me?"

Both the boy and the driver were taken to UCI Medical Center.

Police say neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected to have played a role in this crash, but the driver may have had a medical issue.

Some of the teenager's friends and classmates said they were shocked.

"It makes me feel sad," a classmate, Ramon Marquez, said. "I wasn't expecting that to happen here."
