"California Mexicana: Missions to Murals, 1820–1930" is an exhibit which helps to explore how Mexico eventually became what we now know as California. After the war with Mexico from 1846 to 1848, lands that were once part of New Spain and then Mexico eventually changed hands and became America's 31st state. Artists throughout this time documented this important transition in time with all types of art. The exhibit will juxtapose paintings with posters, prints, and some of the earliest movies made in Los Angeles to show how this image of California spread worldwide. Objects in the exhibit range from beautiful landscapes of Alta California and still life paintings featuring flowers, and other plants which showed off the state's agricultural growth, to art by early modernists such as the Mexican painters Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo.
