Although it feels like summertime throughout most of the year in Los Angeles, many outdoor events prefer to wait until the official start of summer before they move into high gear. From June 21 to late September, families crowd beaches, parks and other locations to enjoy an array of fun activities that are unique to the season. From concerts and movie screenings to river safaris and water play areas, here are some of the best activities to experience in and around L.A., before fall arrives.

From July 6, 2017 to Aug. 26, 2017, the largest public park in Marina del Rey will be alive with the sound of music in a series of free concerts. Each Thursday and Saturday, families will be all types music styles ranging from R&B to Indie and Classical. One of the featured artists slated to perform is singer, actress and producer Matthew Morrison. Other performers include Yo La Tengo and Arturo Sandoval.

Now in its 33sup>rd year, a summertime tradition returns to the Santa Monica Pier. Locals and tourists alike will be entertained by a jamming slew of singers and musicians for a knee-slapping lineup of free concerts. Performers include Warpaint, Khalid and many others.

Many movie enthusiasts say there is something magical about watching a classic film under the natural dome of a star-filled sky. Each Monday, from July 13 to Aug. 10, thousands are expected to gather on the plaza for a series of free family fun. The movies scheduled include "Breakfast at Tiffany's," "The Wiz," "School of Rock" and others! Families are encouraged to bring their own beach chairs and picnic treats. Food trucks will be available for each screening, with audience participation events planned prior to the approximate 8 p.m. showings.

Elysian Valley, a.k.a. Frogtown, is a thrilling part of the L.A. River, where skillful and knowledgeable guides take families with children 10 years old and over on an adventure of a lifetime. After a 15-minute bike ride, explorers in kayaks embark on a 2.5-hour safari that ranges from lazy-river moments to a wallop of small rapids. Daily trips start at 3:45 p.m., with 8 a.m. excursions available from Friday to Sunday. Participants are able to observe such wildlife as geese, blue and green heron, egrets and black neck stilts in their own natural habitat, while learning more about this ecological wonder. Equipment is provided and reservations are required.

With 50 acres of attractions and its own sand beach, this family-friendly location is the largest water park in Southern California.
