Burglary Suspect Found Dead Inside Bellflower Home

BELLFLOWER (CBSLA.com) — A burglary suspect who crashed into two cars, then ran inside a Bellflower home was found dead, hours after the standoff began.

Police were called to the 17600 block of Downey Avenue in Bellflower at 3:11 a.m. after a burglar was reported to be refusing to come out of the home.

The suspect had crashed his Toyota Yaris sedan at Downey Avenue, just north of Jefferson Street. A good Samaritan in a gold Chrysler PT Cruiser stopped to help, but the suspect assaulted him and drove off in PT Cruiser. He got about a mile away before he crashed again.

A woman, and the sole resident of the home, told deputies she locked herself in her bedroom and called 911 when the man broke in.

She was able to escape through one of her bedroom windows and was not injured.

Surrounding homes were evacuated as a precaution.

The standoff went on for more than six hours before a SWAT team entered and found the man dead inside the house. His cause of death was unclear.

The sheriff's department said no shots were fired by deputies.
