Injured Bear Euthanized After Being Struck By Car In La Verne

LA VERNE (CBSLA.com) — A bear was euthanized Monday after suffering several fractures from being struck by a car on the Foothill (210) Freeway.

According to the Inland Valley Humane Society, the bear suffered multiple fractures and a dislocation after being struck by a car at about 7:40 a.m. As a result, the bear could not be returned to the wild and was euthanized, officials said.

The 200-pound bear was later spotted limping in the lanes of the westbound 210 Freeway at Foothill Boulevard. The driver was not injured.

The Fruit Street on-ramp to the freeway, where the bear took refuge amid flowering brush, was closed while authorities waited for Fish and Wildlife wardens to arrive.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the bear appeared to be limping, and was seen periodically laying down, then getting back up to start walking around again.

California Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel twice used a tranquilizer gun on the bear, beginning around 9:40 a.m.

The bear ran off after being shot with the tranquilizer, but it eventually took effect and at about 10:30 a.m the animal was taken safely into custody.
