Baby shot by brother in Compton

Baby shot by brother in Compton

A baby was shot in Compton Wednesday morning.

"I was shocked to be honest," a neighbor said. "I didn't think this would happen on my street."

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the infant was shot at 11:29 a.m. in the 100 block of Poppy Avenue in Compton. The baby was rushed to the hospital by one of the first deputies on the scene.

"I'm all for guns," the neighbor said. "But when a baby gets shot, it's a different story."

Investigators said the victim was a baby girl that was younger than 1 year old. She was shot in the leg by her juvenile brother who was taking care of her at the time. The circumstances are still under investigation, but deputies believe it was an accident. A firearm was recovered from the scene.

Deputies detained the brother for questioning as authorities continue to investigate how the juvenile got the firearm and where the parents were at the time.

Neighbors said they are concerned about their safety because of this shooting and previous home service calls.

"In the past couple of years, they've blocked off the street. Couple of gunshots here and there," said the resident. "Honestly there's a bunch of people coming in and out so I don't really know who's who."

Investigators said it is too early to determine if the brother or his parents will be charged with any crimes.
