Attempted Murder Suspect Detained In Simi Valley

SIMI VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — An attempted murder suspect was in custody Saturday after leading officers on a chase through a residential area.

According to the Simi Valley Police Department, Herbert Alvarenga was seen driving a vehicle around 8:30 p.m. on Friday in the 6500 block of Los Angeles Avenue.

A traffic stop was initiated in the area of Alscot Avenue and Anastasia Avenue, where Alvarenga exited his vehicle and fled Eastbound on foot through a neighborhood, authorities said.

Officers from the Simi Valley Police Department, California Highway Patrol and the Los Angeles Police Department's Air Unit helicopters immediately set up a perimeter in the area to locate Alvarenga, a press release states.

According to officials, two K-9 search teams also assisted in the neighborhood search.

Police said Alvarenga was located in an attached garage of a home located in the 2000 block of Cheam Avenue.

He allegedly entered the garage through an unlocked door, however, he did not attempt to enter the home, officers said.

Authorites said Alvarenga was taken into custody without incident and was booked at the Ventura County Main Jail for his outstanding felony warrant.

Simi Valley police officers urged the public to use this case as a reminder to keep homes secured and locked at all times.
