Asteroid Expected To Fly By Earth On Halloween, NASA Says
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — An asteroid is expected to fly by Earth this Halloween.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said in a document posted online that the asteroid will approach the Earth within 304,471 miles on Oct. 31.
The space agency discovered the asteroid Oct. 10 and described it as an "extremely rare eccentric."
NASA indicated that it hopes to obtain images.
"The fly-by presents a truly outstanding scientific opportunity to study the physical properties of this object," the agency added in that same document.
Another asteroid is not expected to approach this closely again until August 2027.
The object, the agency says, will be challenging to view using small telescopes.
