Armed Suspect Arrested On Suspicion Of Murdering Father Of Two In Ontario

ONTARIO (CBSLA.com) — A 37-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting a father of two in Ontario has been arrested, police said Friday.

According to the Ontario Police Department, Javier Alex Frias, of Ontario, was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of murder.

A citizen alerted police of a man hiding in their backyard chicken coop located in the 200 block of East Phillips Street. Upon their arrival, officers discovered the man was Frias.

Authorities gave orders for him to come out of the chicken coop but he refused. A K9 officer was then deployed and subsequently apprehended Frias.

Paramedics transported him to a local hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the apprehension. Frias has since been released from the hospital. He will be booked into the West Valley Detention Center.

"At the time of his arrest, Frias, a parolee, was found to be armed with a loaded handgun," said Officer Jorge Ramirez. "It is unknown until a forensic examination is conducted if the gun was the same weapon used in the killing."

According to police, Frias was wanted in connection with a deadly shooting that took place around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the intersection of G Street and Vineyard Avenue.

A 40-year-old man was struck by gunfire as he drove in his vehicle with his two children, ages 1 and 4, in the back seat. The driver's identity has not been released. The children were not injured during the incident.

Detectives have determined Frias knew the victim prior to the killing.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident has been urged to contact the Ontario Police Department at (909) 395-2925.
