Armed robbery suspect crashes on Long Beach Freeway

Wild pursuit ends in Long Beach crash

The Los Angeles Police Department was in pursuit of an armed robbery suspect. This suspect may be connected to an assault with a deadly weapon case.

The pursuit began near South Los Angeles but weaved its way through several freeways before going south on the I-710 Freeway.

At least two suspects were inside of the vehicle. The driver seemed to be the only one that bailed out of the SUV after crashing on the highway near Long Beach.

He then jumped off the freeway and onto surface streets. He was seen running away from police before making his way to an alley near West Melrose Way and West 4th Street in Long Beach.

The suspect was last seen outside an apartment complex. Police believe the suspect broke into a family's apartment.

At about 10 p.m., firefighters evacuated a family living in an adjacent apartment by leading them down a ladder set up next to an open window.

Adrian Rios lived in the apartment and said the suspect, who is a friend of his brother, ran into their apartment after crashing the SUV on the 710 Freeway. He said it was a scary situation for his family and neighbors.

"He does come here very often," said Rios. "It was easy for him to come here because he knows my brother ... The door was open and my siblings were here."

Rios said he was working at the time and tried to rush home when he heard about the chase and subsequent standoff.

Police apprehended the suspect at around 10:55 p.m. about three hours after the pursuit started.
