Mother Arrested, Boy Safe Following Long Beach Amber Alert
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Monday cancelled an Amber Alert that was issued following the apparent abduction of a 12-year-old boy in Long Beach, according to officials.
Sri Johnston, 49, was taken into custody by members of the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force in Oceanside around 2:40 p.m., roughly an hour and a half after the alert was issued, authorities said.
Johnston is accused of abducting her 8-year-old son, Nicholas, according to California Highway Patrol officials. She has been charged with one count of kidnapping and one count of child custody deprivation, the District Attorney's Office said.
According to authorities, the alleged abduction took place Thursday afternoon. An Amber Alert was issued Monday after "new information" was gathered, according to Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department.
Johnston picked up her son for visitation Wednesday, according to prosecutors, but did not take him to school the following day.
The boy's father has primary custody of the child, police said.
Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the Long Beach Police Department at (562)570-9650.
