Amazon Wants Airspace Reserved For Delivery Drones, Reports Say
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Amazon is drawing up plans to help safely manage the growing flock of unmanned aerial vehicles filling the skies, according to published reports.
According to The Guardian, the online retail giant suggests dividing airspace into segments and designating a high-speed transit zone.
That suggestion was reportedly announced Tuesday during the Nasa UTM Convention in California.
The publication said the company has proposed reserving space from 200 and 400 feet above the ground for delivery drones.
Amazon said on its website that it hopes to one day use the unmanned aircraft system dubbed Prime Air to deliver packages to customers worldwide in a half hour or less.
The company in March was issued an experimental airworthiness certificate from the FAA to test the new method.
That certificate had imposed several limitations, including operating flights at 400 feet or below in the daylight.
