Actress Marlee Matlin, Lakers' Jordan Hill Joins Thousands In 'Race For The Cure'

ELYSIAN PARK (CBSLA.com) — Academy Award-winning actress Marlee Matlin and LA Lakers' Jordan Hill joined thousands of others Saturday at the 18th Annual Susan G. Komen L.A. County Race for the Cure®.

The annual event to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research got underway at 8:30 a.m. at Dodger Stadium.

Both Matlin and Hill, ambassadors of the race, have been personally impacted by breast cancer. Matlin told CBS2's Joy Benedict that her mother and sister are both survivors.

"They've been through it all and we're just all here for the same reason. To recognize … that it is an important cause," she said, adding that finding a cure is essential.

"It's essential to gain as much knowledge as you can. Breast cancer is out there. That we need to fight it. We need to recognize it. We need to do something about it. And we need to see that it goes away," she said.

Hill, who lost his mother to breast cancer at the age of 3, also participated in last year's race.

"I've been wanting to do it and it's definitely a great event. Great foundation and I'm trying to keep it in my heart as long as possible," he said.

CBS2/KCAL9 is a proud media sponsor of the event.
