Mandatory Evacuations Ordered In Corona As Brush Fire Grows To 2K Acres, Threatens Homes

ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) - A fast-moving brush fire that broke out near the Riverside (91) Freeway on the border of Orange and Riverside counties was threatening homes Monday night.

The Canyon Fire started around 1 p.m. on the eastbound side of the 91 in the west Corona area before spreading to the Coal Canyon Trail, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Larry Kurtz. It had grown to 2,000 acres shortly after 9 p.m. and was 5% contained. At least one structure and one big rig were burned, according to Anaheim Fire & Rescue.

Mandatory evacuations were issued in Corona for all homes south of Green River Road from the 91 Freeway to Trudy Way, including Orchard Glen Tract. Authorities estimated 500 homes were affected.

Evacuation shelters are available at the following locations:

  • Corona High School Gymnasium 1150 W. 10th Street [map]
  • Animal Control will be at the Evacuation Shelter site for assistance

Two eastbound right lanes at Coal Canyon Road were closed Monday afternoon to make room for firefighting equipment, which led to a traffic backup for about seven miles, a CHP spokesperson said.

The slow lane of the eastbound 91 Freeway was also shut down, leading to traffic jams on the 91 and 241 freeways.

The following roads were closed as of 8:25 p.m.:

  • Green River Road is closed at Palisades, Serfas Club, and Paseo Grande. Residents not affected by evacuations will be allowed to enter with ID.

The following schools will be closed Tuesday:

  • Coronita Elementary, Prado View Elementary, Adams Elementary School, Cesar Chavez Academy
