73 Years Later, Survivors Remember Pearl Harbor Attack
SAN PEDRO (CBSLA.com) — Two survivors of the Pearl Harbor attack boarded the USS Iowa Sunday for the 73rd anniversary.
Nelson Mitchell, the last African-American survivor of that day, was in attendance for the ceremony in San Pedro, along with another survivor.
The surprise assault on the headquarters of America's Pacific fleet by the Japanese left more than 2,000 sailors dead, and pulled the United States into World War II.
The 94-year-old Mitchell was stationed on the USS Jarvis.
A moment of silence was held at 9:48 a.m. as part of the memorial service. The 30-minute service was open to the public.
