60 Freeway overpass damaged in crash in Moreno Valley

An overpass of SR-60 in Moreno Valley was damaged on Friday afternoon when an excavator on the back of a big rig scraped the cement, causing it to fall onto the roadway below.

The incident began at around 3:45 p.m. on eastbound lanes of the 60 Freeway, where a semi truck hauling what California Highway Patrol officers initially called an "oversized load," left the Indian Street overpass with damage.

Because of the load, a massive construction excavator, pieces of cement from the underside of the overpass began to fall onto the road, forcing CHP officers to issue an indefinite closure of all lanes.

SkyCal flew over the scene, where cleanup crews were busy trying to clear the rubble from the roadway. The truck, with excavator still on the bed, could be seen parked nearby. Officers had opened the carpool lane to allow traffic a way through the area.

The road was opened at around 9 p.m. officers said.
