SR-118 reopens after Amtrak and truck collide near Somis

SR-118 reopened Wednesday morning after the road was shutdown in both directions following a crash between an Amtrak train and a semi-truck in Ventura County.

Five passengers on the train suffered minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

Firefighters said that 90 people were aboard when the train was heading south to Los Angeles in Somis at about 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday. The California Highway Patrol said the truck was in a protected crossing area before it was somehow disabled on the tracks. The driver was able to jump out in time and officers believe that the gradient at the crossing might have played a factor in the tractor-trailer getting stuck.

At least one train car did derail, but it was not blocking the roadway.

Both Union Pacific and Amtrak trains use the tracks and will be affected until crews can repair them. Officers plan to close the 118 Freeway at Balcom Canyon and Somis Road for most of the night.

The 118 Freeway reopened to traffic early Wednesday morning.
