Good Samaritan Dies Helping Neighbors As Their Sunland Home Burns
SUNLAND (CBSLA) — A man died while rushing to the aid of his neighbors during a house fire in Sunland Wednesday night.
Just after 9:30 p.m. Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded to find flames shooting from a home in the 10700 block of North Big Bend Avenue.
When firefighters got on scene, they found three patients outside: two women, ages 89 and 49, and a 65-year-old man.
The two women live in the home and the man is a neighbor who appears to have come to their aid, the fire department said. In the process the man had suffered a cardiac arrest. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died. His name was not released.
The two women were hospitalized. The 89-year-old woman was in serious condition and the 49-year-old was in fair condition.
Fire officials said the fire was contained to the attached garage and prevented from extending into the residence or the attic.
Firefighters remained on scene to ensure they had put out remaining hot spots.
The Red Cross was assisting the four people who live in the home with temporary housing. Arson investigators are trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
