More Than 50 Dogs & Cats Seized From San Bernardino County Home

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — More than 50 dogs and cats were being evaluated Wednesday after they were seized from a home in San Bernardino County.

Officials were responding to an animal neglect complaint at a house in the Phelan area Wednesday when the home owner surrendered 38 dogs and 17 cats.

The animals were transported to a veterinarian for examination and evaluation where they will be held as evidence pending review of the animal cruelty case by the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office.

Until they are put up for adoption, the dogs and cats will be taken care of at the San Bernardino County Animal Shelter at 19777 Shelter Way in Devore.

Officials say the day after the Fourth of July is historically one of the busiest days of the year for the shelter staff as there is usually an increase of pets that become frightened by fireworks and get lost.

All pet owners are being asked to secure their pets during the holiday weekend and make sure they have proper identification. Individuals and animal rescue organizations are also encouraged to adopt any of the available dogs and cats currently awaiting permanent homes at the shelter.

"Adopting the animals we have that are already available will free up space in the shelter for the influx that will come with the Fourth of July," said Brian Cronin, Chief for Animal Care and Control. "It will also allow staff more time to care for the dogs and cats that were received on Wednesday as a result of this recent animal neglect case. Many of those animals have been neglected and require extended care."

The shelter will be open until 6:30 p.m. Thursday, closed Friday and will reopen Saturday at 10 a.m. Donations can also be made here.
