2nd Woman Charged In Deadly Beating At Metro Blue Line Station

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Friday said a second woman has been charged with murder in connection with the beating death of a man at a Metro Blue Line station.

Virginia Marie Butler was expected to be arraigned on Friday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office said in a written statement.

The statement said Butler along with her co-defendant, Tracy Joy Gomez, are accused of beating 65-year-old John Whitmore while he stood the platform of the Metro Blue Line.

Prosecutors allege that both women left after Whitmore fell to the ground. The incident happened on June 13.

Authorities say Whitmore died a week later from injuries sustained as a result of the beating.

If convicted, the women face a maximum term of life in prison.

Gomez, who was arrested on Aug. 24, is expected to appear in court on Sept. 15, for a preliminary hearing.

Butler was arrested three days later on Aug. 27.

A motive for the incident has not been disclosed.
