2 Killed When Corvette Slams Into Tree, Bursts Into Flames

SANTA CLARITA (CBSLA.com) — A Corvette club's drive through the Angeles National Forest took a turn for the tragic Saturday.

Two people were killed when one of the drivers lost control while maneuvering a curve in the Angeles National Forest and the Corvette slammed into a tree.

The two-seat performance sports car exploded and set fire to some brush, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and California Highway Patrol report.

It happened at 10:55 a.m. as the vehicle headed north on the 34300 block of Bouquet Canyon Road in Santa Clarita.

Corvettes are made of fiberglass, so "it melted to the ground. All we have left now is the engine, the engine casing, the transmission case and the exhaust," CHP Officer Eric Stevenson said.

Investigators measured the skid marks and determined the driver was traveling well above the 50-mph speed limit.

CHP says the driver died on impact.

The passenger was alive immediately after the collision. Some passersby pulled him from the wreckage to give him CPR, but he could not be revived.

The victims have not yet been identified.
