CBS News Los Angeles

Two people were killed and eight others were injured during a shooting at an underground New Year's party in downtown Los Angeles early Monday.

Officers responded to the shooting, which happened at a commercial building located at 2350 Porter Street just after 12:50 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Upon arrival, they heard several gunshots coming from the area near Santa Fe Avenue and Porter Street. Shortly after, a large crowd of people could be seen fleeing from the area on foot, officers said.

They found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds in the street and on the sidewalk on Porter Street, the LAPD statement said.

Paramedics pronounced two of the victims, a man and a woman, dead at the scene.

On Tuesday, they were identified as 24-year-old Los Angeles man Deven Whitaker and 26-year-old Azusa woman Miah Banks.

Eight others were injured in the shooting, most of whom were taken to a local hospital for gunshot wounds. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

Investigators have learned that the victim were attending a New Year's Even celebration at an underground party, and at some point a dispute occurred between some of the partygoers, which led to the shots being fired.

No other information was given on the possible suspect or suspects involved.

Anyone with further information is urged to contact LAPD detectives at (213) 996-4143.
