Crane Collapses At Under-Construction SoFi Stadium In Inglewood
INGLEWOOD (CBSLA) — A 300-foot crane collapsed at the SoFi Stadium construction site in Inglewood Friday.
The crane collapsed into an open parking area just before 8 a.m., according to Los Angeles County Fire officials.
Authorities say a smaller crane was being moved just after 7 a.m. when its boom hit the crane of the larger crane and caused it to topple. The larger crane's arm went down toward the parking area and not onto the stadium, which is still under construction.
The crane came down onto an exterior utility building and damaged some construction vehicles. But no one was on the crane at the time it fell, and no one was injured on the ground.
"Obviously, this is a tremendous work site, so there is still work continuing on other safe locations of the facility," Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Sean Ferguson said. "However, in the immediate vicinity of this incident, we're just working to create a safe working environment for the cleanup process."
OSHA will be involved in the investigation into the accident.
Turner AECOM Hunt, the general contractor of the stadium, said the accident will not impact the stadium's scheduled completion.
SoFi Stadium will be home to the Rams and Chargers. The $5 billion stadium, which is more than 85 percent complete, is scheduled to open this summer.
Several big musical acts and sporting events have committed to playing the new stadium in its first year, including Taylor Swift, Guns N' Roses and Wrestlemania 37, and will host Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the College Football National Championship game in 2023 and the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic Games.
