2 Small Kids Briefly Kidnapped In San Bernardino Carjacking

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — Two children are back safe with their mother Monday after police say they were briefly kidnapped from the front of a convenience store in San Bernardino.

Police say Tatanashia Golden had gone into Rocky Market Liquor at Central and Pacific Street in San Bernardino before 11:30 p.m. to get her two children something to drink when a man jumped into her car – with the engine still running to keep the A/C on -- and took off with her kids sleeping in the backseat.

Golden said she jumped on the car's hood to stop the carjacking, but the suspect swerved back and forth until she fell off the car. Two bystanders nearby helped her chase down the carjacker and call 911.

The carjacking suspect lost control of the car and crashed on a curb of Pacific Street. He was later found by a police K-9 a short distance away and identified as 21-year-old Steven Craig Young, a San Bernardino transient.

The two children, a 1-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl clad only in diapers, were found safe, San Bernardino police Officer Michelle Mahan said.

Young faces kidnapping and carjacking charges.
