16-Year-Old Passenger Killed In Saugus Crash Blamed On Speeding

SAUGUS (CBSLA.com)  —  Authorities said a 16-year-old Palmdale boy was killed in a crash in Bouquet Canyon blamed on a driver who was speeding.

Officials said the teen was a passenger in a Mazda Miata that spun out of control before slamming into a tree.

The single-car accident was reported on the winding road, near Spunky Canyon Road and north of Saugus, at about 4:50 p.m. Saturday.

The 22-year-old male driver -- also a Palmdale resident -- suffered major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The teen's name is being withheld until his family can be notified, said Betsy Magdaleno, an investigator with the coroner's office.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene about half hour after the crash.
