Gunman connected to fatal shooting in Santa Monica still on the loose

A woman experiencing homelessness was arrested for allegedly fatally shooting a man in Santa Monica early Thursday morning.

The shooting happened a little before 10:30 a.m. in the 2600 block of 29th Street, near Ocean Park Boulevard, according to Santa Monica Police Department.

Officers, who were called to the scene for reports of shots fired in the area, arrived to find one person suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. Investigators identified him as 46-year-old Edward Williams III.

The surrounding area was closed for hours, until around 6 p.m. while police surveyed the area and conducted their preliminary investigation.

With SkyCal overhead, a black Ford Mustang SUV with a shattered driver-side window could be seen parked on the street, with piles of what appeared to be bloody clothes nearby.

Authorities said they arrested 27-year-old Kayla Denise Mackey on Friday. Investigators said she was currently homeless.

People who live around the area where the shooting occurred said that the area is usually safe, and that they didn't notice anything out of the ordinary before the incident.

Investigators have not released any further information.
