Bicyclist killed during brief pursuit in South Los Angeles

Pursuit ends in deadly crash in South LA

A bicyclist was killed at the end of a brief pursuit in South Los Angeles Wednesday morning.

The bicyclist was identified as Jose Monsalve Rojas, age 46, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner's office. Rojas pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics.

The pursuit started just after 6 a.m. before the driver crashed at Hooper Avenue and 45th Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

During the pursuit, the suspect hit Rojas as he was riding his bike on the street before crashing, hitting multiple vehicles and a power line pole.

The suspect got out of the flipped vehicle and attempted to run away before officers took him into custody, according to LAPD.  

Authorities said the suspect was wanted for burglary and assault.

SkyCAL flew over the scene and could see the overturned vehicle in the middle of the street.

No other injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.
