Student shot at Grant High School in stable condition

The Los Angeles police responded to a shooting at Ulysses S. Grant High School in Valley Glen, located at 13000 Oxnard St.

Both LA School police and officers from the Los Angeles Police department responded to the scene, and believe the incident might have been gang-related.

According to police, a male student was shot in the leg, in the area of Oxnard St. and Coldwater Canyon, in front of the school, and was transported to Cedars Sinai in stable condition.

Authorities also reported that shots might have come from a vehicle and that units were searching for a green Honda Accord.

Police had streets in the area cordoned off while they investigated the incident and the school was locked down for an unknown duration.

Students were allowed to leave the campus at around 4:15 p.m.

"The worst way to end high school," said one student. "I never thought I would experience something like this, especially not at my school - the place where I thought I was safe."

In a statement, officials at the Los Angeles Unified School District said the incident is still under active investigation by law enforcement and that the district will have a team of counselors on-site ready to help support students and employees.

"It's a sad day when our children are exposed to community violence. We as adults have a collective responsibility to ensure we are buffers to our children by listening, protecting, connecting and modeling and making sure they continue to thrive and feel safe," the statement read in part.

Counselors were on hand Thursday to speak with students at the high school, especially those facing emotional distress from the incident.

"I think it's fresh for everybody," said Los Angeles School Police Department Lieutenant Rudy Perez. "I think every parent's nightmare is when they see their school on TV or when they hear a phone call from their son or daughter."
