1 woman killed and 5 officers shot after standoff at Phoenix home; baby rescued

Woman killed, officers hurt in standoff with gunman in Phoenix

One woman is dead and nine police officers were injured after a shooting and standoff that involved a person barricaded inside a Phoenix home, police said Friday. The suspect is also dead.

Five of the officers were shot and four were hurt by bullet ricochet or shrapnel, officials said. Four of the officers remain hospitalized, though all are expected to survive.

The incident unfolded after police responded to a 911 call overnight saying a woman had been shot. An officer approached the home and was invited inside. As he approached the doorway, he was ambushed by the suspect and shot multiple times, said Phoenix Police Sergeant Andy Williams.

A man later came to the door holding an infant, and placed the baby on the ground, Williams said. He then walked away from the home with his hands up and was detained by police. Police officers then moved in to get the baby and four other officers were shot.

Williams commended the "heroic" officers who approached the home to rescue the child — even after another officer had been ambushed and shot.

Williams said the man who brought the baby outside is believed to be a family member who was living in the home. He is cooperating with police and is not considered a suspect.

Police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Morris Jones. Williams did not say if Jones had any prior encounters with the department.

A SWAT team responded to the scene and found the suspect dead inside. The woman — who was the suspect's former girlfriend — was found critically injured.

Police said Jones and woman have a child together and that the baby girl at the scene is believed to be their child.

A reporter with CBS affiliate KPHO-TV said the scene was "much calmer" after the threat was over. She tweeted photos showing holes in the home's second-story windows.
