2019 NFL Draft Round 1: Kyler Murray picked first overall by Cardinals

The 2019 NFL Draft kicked off in Nashville on Thursday night where the Arizona Cardinals selected Heisman winner and Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the first overall pick. The league's 32 teams selected from a pool of the best college football players in the country.

There were some surprises early on: The New York Giants selecting Duke quarterback Daniel Jones, and the Pittsburgh Steelers trading up to draft Michigan linebacker Devin Bush. Also surprising was the college team that came out on top during the first round: Mississippi State, which saw three players drafted, including Montez Sweat, Johnathan Abram and Jeffery Simmons.

Here's a recap of NFL Draft round one picks as they happened:

32. N'Keal Harry goes to the Patriots

11:54 p.m.: With the 32nd and final pick of the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Super Bowl champions New England Patriots select wide receiver N'Keal Harry (Arizona State).

Harry was a back--to-back member of the First-Team All-Pac 12 team in 2017 and 2018. He is the first WR taken by the Patriots in the first round since 1996.

31. Atlanta Falcons pick Kaleb McGary

11:51 p.m.: At 31 in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons trade up and select offensive tackle Kaleb McGary (Washington).

McGary was a back-to-back first-team All-Pac 12 honoree in his sophomore and junior seasons.

30. New York Giants select Deandre Baker

11:45 p.m.: With the 30th pick, the New York Giants select cornerback DeAndre Baker (Georgia).

Baker was named the Jim Thorpe Award winner for best defensive back in college football.

29. L.J. Collier goes to the Seattle Seahawks

11:44 p.m.: With the 29th pick, the Seattle Seahawks select defensive lineman L.J. Collier (TCU).

Collier was a first-time All-Big 12 honoree in 2018 and recorded 45 tackles and 6 sacks that season.

28. Los Angeles Chargers pick Jerry Tillery

11:27 p.m.: At 28th in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Chargers select defensive lineman Jerry Tillery (Notre Dame).

Originally recruited for the Fighting Irish as an offensive tackle, Tillery switched to defensive tackle and racked up 133 total tackles in four seasons. He graduated with a degree in economics and interned for a hedge fund in Ireland during his time at Notre Dame.

27. Oakland Raiders pick Johnathan Abram

11:20 p.m.: With the 27th pick and their third of the night, the Raiders select defensive back Johnathan Abram (Mississippi State).

A 2018 third-team All-American, Abram is the second Bulldog to go in a row after his teammates Montez Sweat. This is the first time ever Mississippi State has had three players taken in the first round.

26. Washington Redskins select Montez Sweat

11:16 p.m.: The Washington Redskins trade up to the 26th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and select defensive end Montez Sweat (Mississippi State).

He saw his stock drop after the NFL Combine revealed a possible heart condition but reports early today indicate that was likely a misdiagnosis.

25. Marquise Brown goes to the Baltimore Ravens

11:04 p.m.: With the 25th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens select wide receiver Marquise Brown (Oklahoma).

Brown joins Sooners teammate Kyler Murray as a first-round pick and is the first wide receiver to be taken in this year's draft. Brown was a first-time All-Big 12 and All-American honoree in 2018 and is currently sidelined with a Lisfranc injury. His cousin is Raiders' wide receiver Antonio Brown.

24. Josh Jacobs heads to the Raiders

10:56 p.m.: With the 24th pick and their second in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Raiders select running back Josh Jacobs (Alabama).

A 2017 National Champion with the Crimson Tide, Jacobs was named the MVP of the SEC Championship Game last season. Jacobs recorded 16 rush TDs and 1,491 rushing yards in his three seasons at Alabama, and is the first RB taken in the 2019 draft.

23. Tytus Howard picked by Houston Texans

10:49 p.m.: With the 23rd pick, the Houston Texans select offensive line man Tytus Howard (Alabama State).

Howard initially walked onto the team as a TE but switched to Tackle and is the first ever Alabama State player to be drafted in the first round.

22. Philadelphia Eagles pick Andre Dillard

10:40 p.m.: The Philadelphia Eagles trade up and select offensive tackle Andre Dillard (Washington State) with the 22nd pick. Dillard is the first Washington State lineman to be drafted in the first round and the first WSU player since 2014.

21. Green Bay Packers pick Darnell Savage Jr.

10:38 p.m.: The Green Bay Packers trade up to the 21st spot and select safety Darnell Savage Jr. (Maryland).

The senior racked up 52 tackles and four interceptions for the Terrapins in 2018. The Seattle Seahawks will take Green Bay's 30th pick, as well as two fourth-picks this year.

20. Pittsburgh Steelers pick Noah Fant

10:30 p.m.: Tight end Noah Fant (Iowa) is heading to the Steelers in the 20th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

The second Hawkeye TE to be taken in the first round this year, Fant was a first-team All-Big Ten honoree and recorded 19 TDs and 1,082 receiving yards in three seasons.

19. Tennessee Titans pick Jeffery Simmons

10:23 p.m.: With the 19th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans select defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons (Mississippi State).

A two-time first-team All-SEC honoree, Simmons tore his ACL in February while training for the draft.

He was barred from the NFL Combine after being involved in a physical altercation in 2016 with three women and was found guilty of malicious mischief. Considered the top recruit of the year, Simmons was allowed to enroll at Mississippi State after the incident but was suspended the first game. In an apology posted in 2016, Simmons took responsibility, saying "What was I thinking? Honestly, I wasn't thinking, all I could think was this is my family and I am supposed to defend my family." He will start the NFL season on the PUP list and will be re-evaluated in October.

18. Garrett Bradbury heading to Minnesota Vikings

10:15 p.m.: Garret Bradbury (North Carolina State) is going to the Vikings.

The 2018 All-American consensus pick won the Rimington Trophy for the best center in college football.

17. New York Giants takes Dexter Lawrence

10:11 p.m.: Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence (Clemson) is heading to the Giants as their second pick of the night.

A two-time first-team All-ACC honoree, he won two national championships with the Tigers in 2016 and 2018. Lawrence is the third Clemson defensive lineman taken in the top 20 this year.

16. Carolina Panthers choose Brian Burns

10:03 p.m: Defensive end Brian Burns (Florida State) is heading to the Panthers as an offensive line backer.

The first-team All-ACC honoree racked up 52 tackles and 10 sacks in the 2018 season for the Seminoles.

15. Washington Redskins pick Dwayne Haskins

9:58 p.m.: Quarterback Dwayne Haskins (Ohio State) is heading to the Redskins.

A first-team All Big-Ten honoree and Heisman Award finalist, Haskins wrapped up his Buckeyes career with 58 total TDs and 5,396 passing yards.

14. Atlanta Falcons pick Chris Lindstrom

9:51 p.m.: Guard Chris Lindstrom (Boston College) is heading to the Falcons.

The third in his family to make the NFL, Lindstrom lined up next to his brother Alec for the BC Eagles. He is the first from Boston College to go in the first round since Luke Kuechly in 2012.

13. Miami Dolphins take Christian Wilkins

9:45 p.m.: Defensive tackle Christian Wilkins (Clemson) is heading to the Dolphins.

Winner of the William V. Campbell trophy for the Academic Heisman, Wilkins was the first Clemson scholarship football player to earn his degree in just two and a half years. The DT was a first-team All-American and All-ACC with 57 tackles, 15 for loss, in his senior season. Wilkins wears the number 42 to honor his grandfather who was mistakenly killed during a police raid in 2011.

12. Rashan Gary heads to Green Bay Packers

9:40 p.m.: Defensive end Rashan Gary (Michigan) was picked by the Packers to play as a line backer.

Gary racked up 44 tackles, seven for loss, in the 2018 season and also is the CEO of his own sports agency.

11. Jonah Williams heads to Cincinnati Bengals

9:33 p.m.: The second member of the Crimson Tide to be taken so far in this draft, guard Jonah Williams (Alabama) is a two-time SEC champion and was named a unanimous All-American in 2018.

10. Pittsburgh Steelers trade up, pick Devin Bush

9:27 p.m.: The Pittsburgh Steelers trade up to the No. 10 spot and pick inside linebacker Devin Bush (Michigan).

The Broncos move down to the 20th and 52nd picks, as well as a third-round in 2020.

Bush earned both the Big Ten Defensive Player and Linebacker awards in 2018. His dad, Devin Bush Sr., was also a first-round pick and was on the Super Bowl-winning Rams in 2000.

9. Buffalo Bills pick Ed Oliver

9:20 p.m. ET: Ed Oliver (Houston), a three time first-team All-American, has racked up 192 career tackles in three seasons for the Cougars.

8. Detroit Lions select T.J. Hockenson

9:11 p.m.: Detroit Lions select tight end T.J. Hockenson (Iowa). He becomes just the fourth TE to be drafted in the first round since 1997 and won the 2018 John Mackey Award.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars select Josh Allen

9:08 p.m: Defensive end Josh Allen (Kentucky) is heading to Jacksonville.

Winner of both the Bednarik and Nagurski trophies for best defensive players, Allen joins his sister Myisha Hines-Allen (2018 WNBA draft pick) as a professional athlete family. For the second straight year, another player named Josh Allen was selected with the seventh overall pick, after QB Josh Allen was drafted by the Bills in 2018.

6. New York Giants pick quarterback Daniel Jones

9:02 p.m.: Daniel Jones (Duke) is the second quarterback taken tonight and brought the Blue Devils to back-to-back bowl wins.

Jones' college coach, Dave Cutliffe, also coached current Giants QB Eli Manning, who Jones is expected to slot behind.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Devin White

8:56 p.m.: Bucs superfan and Make a Wish recipient Kacey Reynolds announced the pick for Tampa Bay: inside linebacker Devin White (LSU).

Originally recruited by the Tigers as a running back, White became the first from LSU to win the Butkus award as the best linebacker in college football.

4. Defensive end Clelin Ferrell goes to Oakland Raiders

8:50 p.m.: A member of the 2018 National Championship winning team, Clelin Ferrell (Clemson) was a first-team All ACC honoree and winner of the Ted Hendricks Award for best college defensive end.

3. New York Jets select defensive tackle Quinnen Williams

8:40 p.m. ET: The 2018 Outland Trophy winner for best interior lineman, Quinnen Williams was a member of Alabama's Crimson Tide team that lost in the National Championship Game.

2. Nick Bosa goes to San Francisco 49ers

8:30 p.m.: With the second pick of the 2019 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select defensive end Nick Bosa (Ohio State). Bosa follows in the footsteps of his older brother Joey who was the third overall pick in the 2016 draft.

Bosa and his brother join Peyton and Eli Manning as the second pair of siblings to be taken in the first three picks of the NFL Draft. The DE, who missed the 2018 season after having core muscle surgery, recently deleted tweets critical of former 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick. 'I had to ... there's a chance I might end up in San Francisco," Bosa said in an ESPN interview.

1. Kyler Murray selected first by Arizona Cardinals

8:25 p.m.: With the first pick of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals select quarter back Kyler Murray (Oklahoma).

The Heisman Trophy winner will figure to be a major offensive weapon for the struggling Cardinals, who went 3-13 last season.It's unclear what the team plans to do with its former first round pick, quarterback Josh Rosen. Less than one year ago, the Cards traded up to draft the UCLA product with the 10th overall pick of the 2018 draft.After the selection the team tweeted a quote from head coach Kliff Kingsbury that simply said, "Josh is our guy."

Murray, who was a first-round MLB pick, was the 2018 Davey O'Brien winner for best quarterback and Heisman winner. This is the second year in a row an Oklahoma quarterback has been the number one overall draft pick.

Roger Goodell takes the podium

8:09 p.m.: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell officially welcomes the next generation of players to the league.

He was joined on stage by Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota.

History of the NFL Draft

The NFL Draft is an old tradition dating back 31 years before the the first Super Bowl. The first-ever NFL draft was held 83 years ago at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Philadelphia. There were only nine teams in the league at that time.

Back then, the NFL owners wanted a process to enable weaker teams to have a better chance at landing top college prospect. In the 17th year of the league, the NFL devised the method still used today where the previous year's last-place team earns the first selection.

The Philadelphia Eagles had the first-ever draft pick, selecting Jay Berwanger from the University of Chicago. Berwanger also had the distinction of being the first to receive the "Downtown Athletic Club Trophy," which was later renamed to the Heisman Trophy.
