Virginia called for Democrat Ralph Northam, as New Jersey goes to Democrat Phil Murphy
CBS News has projected Democratic Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam will win the governor's race in Virginia, and Democrat Phil Murphy will win the same seat in New Jersey.
Murphy's win over Republican Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno was expected. But the Virginia race with Republican Ed Gillespie was expected to be closer, and is a possible indication that President Trump's approach is not working in that commonwealth. Tuesday marks the first regularly scheduled Election Day since Mr. Trump's victory this time last year, and the two races have been closely watched.

In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio has won a second term in office. He easily defeated Republican state Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis of Staten Island and a slew of third-party candidates, including former NYPD police officer and security expert Bo Dietl.
And while health care continues to pose as an area of contention for both Republicans and Democrats in Washington, Maine residents are voting on Tuesday to potentially join 31 other states that have expanded Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act. The ballot measure comes after Maine's governor vetoed five different legislative attempts to expand the program.
When do polls close?
Polls in Virginia close at 7:00 p.m. ET while both New Jersey and Maine polls close at 8:00 p.m. ET. Voters in New York have until 9:00 p.m. ET before their polls close for the night.

Democrats gaining seats in Va. House of Delegates
9 p.m. According to pundits, Democrats are on track to gain a number of seats in the House of Delegates, in what could be the biggest upset of Election Day.
The House of Delegates is Virginia's lower chamber, and has been heavily Republican in recent years.
Trump tweets about Gillespie's loss
8:45 p.m. President Trump, who has promoted Gillespie in the Virginia race, tweeted that Gillespie did not embrace him or what he stood for, breaking with Gillespie.
The president also endorsed Luther Strange in the Alabama Senate primary, and distanced himself from the candidate when he lost to the ultra-conservative Roy Moore.
CBS News calls Virginia for Democrat Ralph Northam
8:18 p.m. CBS News has projected Ralph Northam as the winner in Virginia's gubernatorial race, handing Democrats two gubernatorial wins on Tuesday night.
NBC projects Northam as winner in Va.
8:11 p.m. NBC has projected Northam as the winner in Virginia's gubernatorial race, with more than 50 percent of precincts reporting.
As of 8:13 p.m., Northam had 51.5 percent of the vote, compared with Gillespie's 47.3 percent.
In New Jersey, gov't corruption most important issue
8:09 p.m. In New Jersey, government corruption was the top issue for voters, followed by property taxes.
New Jersey residents are worried they could pay more in taxes if the current GOP tax bill passes. That bill does not allow homeowners to deduct property taxes, which are among the highest in the country in New Jersey.
In New Jersey, 66 percent of voters disapprove of President Trump's job as president, according to CBS News exit polls.

Northam is ahead in the Virginia governor's race, which is still too soon to call.

8 p.m. The polls have closed in New Jersey, with ABC and NBC giving the race an early call in favor of Murphy.
Northam pulling ahead in Va.
7:46 p.m.: As more precincts begin to report, Northam is pulling ahead in Virginia.
With nearly 30 percent of precincts reporting, Northam is beginning to pull ahead with more than 50 percent of the vote, compared to Gillespie's 48 percent, according to the Virginia Department of Elections.
Dave Wasserman, the editor of the Cook Political Report, projected a Northam win.
Va. tied with only 11 percent reporting
7:34 p.m. With just 11.46 percent of precincts reporting, Gillespie and Northam are roughly tied -- Northam with 49.05 percent of the vote, and Gillespie with 49.87 percent of the vote, according to the Virginia Department of Elections.
Precincts in heavily populated, heavily Democratic Northern Virginia have yet to report.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe doesn't rule out presidential bid
7:26 p.m.: Outgoing Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe said he wants to finish out his term strong as governor, and wouldn't tell CBSN whether he will run for president in 2020.
"I'm finishing strong as governor," he said.
Virginia's governors are limited to one four-year term.

It's hard to say yet what effect heavy rain much of the day in Northern Virginia, the most heavily populated part of the state, had on voter turnout.
