Tanker Carrying Fuel Overturns On I-5 At Richards Boulevard In Sacramento, Closures To Last Through Evening

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Richards Boulevard along Interstate 5 was closed after a tanker truck carrying ethanol rolled over.

Around 10:04 a.m., the big rig tanker rolled over, causing a puncture in the tanker, which is carrying 7,500 gallons of ethanol. There is an active leak and fuel is said to be flowing down the embankment. Hazmat workers have responded to the scene, according to a Sacramento Fire Department spokesperson.

Richards Boulevard is closed in both directions. The southbound offramp to Richards Boulevard is also closed.

No injuries have been reported.

Caltrans announced a full closure of southbound I-5 Monday evening. All southbound lanes of the interstate will be closed at the Interstate 80 junction around 8 p.m. so crews can upright the tanker truck and clean up the fuel spill.

During the shutdown, Caltrans will close the following freeway on-ramps and connectors to SB I-5:

  • Westbound Interstate 80 connector
  • Eastbound I-80 connector
  • El Camino on-ramp
  • The Richards Boulevard and Garden Highway on-ramps
  • The Richards Boulevard off-ramp

This crash may cause traffic delays for soccer fans heading to Capitol Mall Monday afternoon for the public block party. Drivers heading southbound to the MLS rally are advised to take alternate routes.
