Women Found Fatally Shot At Home In Inkster
INKSTER (WWJ/AP) - Police are investigating what appears to be a double murder after two women were found dead at a home in Inkster.
The shooting was reported around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 27000 block of Florence, south of Michigan Avenue between Inkster Road and John Daly.
Officers responded to the home and found the women dead with multiple gunshot wounds. Other circumstances weren't immediately clear.
Police have not yet identified the victims, but Harriet Hicks told WWJ's Vickie Thomas that one of the women was her 38-year-old niece Shara Newell, a mother of five children.
"It's very devastating. My sister went bonkers at first but she's pulling herself together," Hicks said. "But you can imagine, she only had two daughters and this is her youngest daughter."
Hicks said it appears the gunman ambushed Newell and her friend.
"Somebody came to the door and shot them. She got killed and there wasn't anyone there," she said.
Inkster Police Chief Vicki Yost told WWJ that one of the victims was "known to police," but she wouldn't elaborate. Newell's cousin, LaTasha, isn't very happy with Yost's comment.
"An apology needs to be made for that statement because it's not fair. She's deceased now. No bad terminology should have been put on her death," she said, adding that her cousin was a beautiful person. "She had a good, caring heart. I could call her for anything and she would always come through for me. She was a good-spirited person."
Yost said this was "definitely not" a random shooting. Investigators are following "strong leads" in the case, but have not yet named a suspect.
Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact police at 313-563-9850 or 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
