Woman Will Face Charges After Allegedly Assaulting Husband At Northern Michigan Wedding
CEDAR, Mich. (WWJ) -- A Howell woman is expected to be arraigned Tuesday on charges of domestic assault after she allegedly beat up her husband at a wedding over the weekend in Leelanau County.
Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich says police had contact with the suspect before and said she's actually very nice -- when she's not drinking.
"Maybe they're arguing over money or something with the kids or something in [the] household, domestically related," Borkovich said about the rise in such cases. "Usually it's over finances. When those things happen -- you add alcohol or drugs and it becomes more violent."
Borkovich said police were called out to the reception at a home in Cedar, Michigan -- northwest of Traverse City -- on Saturday, where the woman was striking the man.
"It is sad, and a lot of times people are stuck on the idea that men are always assaulting women and that's not true at all," Borkovich said. "We find that a lot of women -- at least in this area -- assault men. Sometimes the men don't report it because they appear to be afraid to do that, be laughed at by their buddies -- 'you're letting your wife or girlfriend beat you.'"
Borkovich says up to 50 percent of domestic violence cases he now sees involve women assaulting men. The 41-year-old woman could get jail time if found guilty.
