Woman Killed, Child Injured As Shots Ring Out During Apparent Domestic Dispute In Pontiac
PONTIAC (WWJ) - A man is in police custody after his girlfriend was shot dead and her child injured during an apparent domestic dispute in Pontiac.
The incident happened just before 10 p.m. Tuesday in the 200 block of S. Shirley, in a neighborhood near Woodward and Auburn avenues.
According to police, a 32-year-old woman was arguing with her 21-year-old boyfriend in an upstairs bedroom when the man produced a 9mm handgun and opened fire.
The woman was struck numerous times in the chest area and fell into the closet. Her 2-year-old daughter, who was standing next to her mother when shots rang out, was struck once in the upper leg.
Downstairs in the living room were the woman's 11-year-old son, 13-year-old daughter and 18-year-old brother. They were not injured. One of the kids called 911 and police immediately responded to the scene.
Oakland County Sheriff's deputies found the 2-year-old girl in the closet with her dead mother. The girl was rushed to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital and was last listed in stable condition.
Eight minutes after police received the 911 call from the victims' home, they were dispatched to the 700 block of 4th Street on a report of shots fired. Deputies arrived on the scene and found the woman's boyfriend in the street standing next to his vehicle. Apparently the suspect had fired shots into the air, but no one was injured.
The suspect, identified only as a Waterford Township man, was ordered to the ground and taken into custody. The 9mm handgun believed to be used in the homicide was located next to suspect, police said.
The suspect remains in custody at the Oakland County Jail. Police say he has no children in common with the victim.
The father of the injured child was notified of the situation and met deputies at the hospital.
It's unclear what charges the suspect, who has no criminal history, might be facing.
An investigation is ongoing.
