Woman Dies After Crashing Into Tree While Skiing At Pine Knob

INDEPENDENCE TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a 51-year-old woman has died after she crashed while skiing in Oakland County.

The incident happened Friday night at Pine Knob Ski Resort in Independence Township. Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene after receiving a report of an injured skier and arrived to find the woman conscious and speaking with EMS about her fall.

Investigators say the woman apparently fell while skiing, crashed into a tree and then went into a retaining fence. She was briefly unconscious and had to be freed from the tangled fence.

The woman complained of having chest pains and was taken to an area hospital, where she later died from injuries suffered in the fall. Her name has not yet been released, although police say she lived in Macomb County.

Robert Shick, general manager at Pine Knob, declined to comment "out of respect for the family in their time of grief."

Pine Knob was closed Monday amid an investigation into the death. A message on their website says the resort is also closed Tuesday.
