Woman Arrested After Holding Police At Bay, Shooting At Husband Who Was 'Out All Night'

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police have arrested a woman who barricaded herself inside a west side apartment building following a shooting that was apparently sparked by an argument with her husband.

The situation unfolded Friday morning at an apartment complex on Santa Maria Avenue and Meyers Road, near the Lodge Freeway and McNichols Road.

Commander Elvin Barren said everything started when the woman's husband came home around 7 a.m. after being out drinking all night.

"The wife grew angry, due to her thinking that he may have been with another female, at which time she fired shots with a shotgun through the front door," Barren told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

The man was able to get away without injury and call police. By the time officers arrived on the scene, the woman had barricaded herself inside the apartment and refused to come out.

"They do have a history, none recorded, but he states that this is not the first time she's pulled a weapon on him but this is the first time, however, that she's fired and shot at him," Barren said. "The husband stated that she was using narcotics and alcohol."

Officers evacuated four apartment units in the building as negotiators tried to coax the woman from her home. Just before 9:40 a.m., the woman gave herself up and was taken into custody.

"I do believe that due to the narcotics and alcohol, she may have been asleep," Barren said.

The woman is now facing charges that could include reckless endangerment or even attempted murder.

It was the second barricaded gunman situation Detroit police dealt with in a matter of hours Friday morning. In the other incident, a man fired shots outside of his home after getting into an argument with his girlfriend over money.
