Police: Barricaded Gunman Apparently Kills Himself After Standoff In Wayne

WAYNE (WWJ) -- After a nearly day-long standoff, police say that a barricaded gunman killed himself inside a house near Wayne City Hall on Monday evening.

Lt. Ryan Strong told WWJ Newsradio 950 that officers entered the home just before 9 p.m., where they found a 39-year-old man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident took place on Ash Street — near Wayne Rd. and Fourth St.  — and put Wayne City Hall on lockdown, along with other municipal offices.

WWJ spoke with a business owner in that area who said authorities were focusing on a single home. The man, who didn't want to be named, reported seeing a police officer with what appeared to be an assault rifle monitoring the area.

Wayne-Westland School Superintendent Michelle Harmala said Wayne Memorial High School, located at the other end of Ash Street, was also put on lockdown early in the afternoon, as a precaution. Students were later sent home early, around 2 p.m.

No other injuries were reported. An investigation is ongoing.
