Wayne County Voters To Be Asked For Extra Money For Schools
DETROIT (AP) - Some Detroit-area residents are expected to vote this fall on a proposed property tax designed to boost funding for schools.
The Wayne County Regional Educational Service Agency's board on Wednesday passed a motion to put the millage on the November ballot in Wayne County. Officials say it would provide more than $385 per student in additional resources per year for six years.
Wayne RESA Superintendent Randy Liepa says in a statement state funding cuts in recent years have left schools "struggling to provide the services our kids deserve."
The tax would start for the 2016-2017 school year. Funding would be distributed to districts in Wayne County to use as each sees fit. Wayne RESA says the proposal would cost homeowners roughly $8 per month per $100,000 in their home's value.
