Wayne County Man Charged With Abuse In Near-Fatal Beating Of 6-Month-Old Son
TAYLOR (WWJ/AP) - A 23-year-old father is facing a first-degree child abuse charge in connection with the near-fatal beating of his 6-month-old son at their southeastern Michigan home.
Nicholas Spirdione, of Taylor, is expected to be arraigned on the felony charge Tuesday afternoon on accusations he severely beat his infant son, Jesse. Corie Stahl, the boy's mother, told reporters that Jesse is in critical condition after doctors performed several surgeries to relieve swelling on his brain.
Police say paramedics responded around 4:55 p.m. Saturday to Spirdione's home in the 6600 block of Pine, near Telegraph Road just south of I-94, after receiving a report that an infant was breathing with difficulty and having trouble staying conscious.
Spirdione, an EMT by profession, was arrested that night after being questioned by police.
"He admitted to punching Jesse several times. They think that, from the damage that was done, that he had to have hit him with something or dropped him," Stahl told WJBK.
If convicted as charged, Spirdione faces 15-years behind bars.
