Water Main Break Outside Strip Club Floods Michigan Avenue

DETROIT (WWJ) - A water main break has flooded the area outside of a strip club on Detroit's west side.

Fire crews were called to the Crazy Horse Adult Entertainment Club on Michigan Avenue, just east of Lonyo Avenue, around 3 a.m. Thursday after water started flooding the area outside of the club.

Officials arrived on the scene and determined that a water main had apparently burst.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Mike Campbell said water has flooded Michigan Avenue "from curb to curb." Further complicating matters, temperatures early Thursday were only around 10 degrees, leaving the pavement slick and icy.

Ken Corbett was coming back from dropping his wife off at work when his car stalled out in the water.

"I knew it was there but I forgot about it and I came up through it and doggone it, I got stuck," he said. The water was half way up Corbett's calf when he exited his car to get to safety. "My feet are frozen. Frozen!"

City workers started pumping the water around 8:30 a.m. and about an hour later, most of it was gone. However, because of the cold temperatures, a thick layer of ice was left behind after the water subsided.

The water main now needs extensive repairs and crews say it could be one or two days before the problem is fixed.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.
