Was An Assault At A Dearborn Kroger Race-Related? Police Are Investigating

DEARBORN (WWJ) - Police in Dearborn are trying to figure out what sparked a fight at a grocery store — including whether race may have played a part.

The alleged assault happened Thursday at the Kroger at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Greenfield.

Police and fire rescue were on scene within three minutes of receiving 911 calls about a fight in progress at the store, according to police.

"The incident is currently being thoroughly investigated to determine whether it involves a criminal assault and/or whether it was motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender(s) bias," police said.

As an investigation continues, Chief Ronald Haddad said in a statement that his department has asked for assistance from "federal and state partners" which would seem to indicate they are looking into a potential hate crime.

"The Dearborn police will make full disclosure of this incident once fully investigated," Haddad said, adding that the partners "have agreed to provide any resources deemed appropriate."

There was no information immediately available as to injuries or the ethnicity of those involved in the altercation. It was also unclear what, if any, charges might be pending in the case.

WWJ Newsradio 950 has a call out to Dearborn police seeking more details.
