Woman Killed When Vehicle Explodes On The Lodge Freeway
DETROIT (WWJ) - A woman died Tuesday afternoon in an accident, car fire and explosion on the Lodge Freeway.
It happened during the afternoon commute along northbound M-10, just north of the Telegraph Road exit.
Only the left lane was open, and traffic was stop-and-go back to 8 Mile Road. With emergency crews still on the scene after 7 p.m., motorists were urged to avoid the area.
Michigan State Police confirmed there were three vehicles involved in the crash, and the woman who died was inside the car that exploded.
WWJ's Lance Howard was above the scene in Chopper 950 when it happened.
"This is very bad," Howard said. "We've got a vehicle that was rear-ended and exploded — it's completely engulfed. I'm not sure if there's anybody still inside...We have a lot of Samaritans that were trying to assist. Now they're staying away from the vehicle."
The details of the crash were unclear as an investigation continues, with a Southfield Special Response Team, Southfield Fire and Michigan State Police assisting.
Police said the freeway was expected to be fully back open to traffic in time for Wednesday's morning commute.
