Valentine's Day Love Story: Popping The Question On A Painting

FERNDALE (WWJ) - Picking Valentine's Day as the time to pop the question may be a no-brainer — but one metro Detroit man may have perfected the marriage proposal last Feb. 14.

"The single most hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life. I was shaking the whole time," 23-year-old Terrell Williams told WWJ's Marie Osborne.

One year ago, Terrell plotted with the staff of Painting with a Twist in Ferndale to surprise his girlfriend Alicia during a fun night out.

"I couldn't think of how I wanted to do it, and I was like, maybe I should write it on a painting; but I was like, no, that might mess up the painting....And she's like, 'Will you marry me' could never mess up the painting," Terrell said.

Terrell decided to distract his sweetheart by asking her to go wash the paint brushes, while he wrote the proposal on the painting.

"I was like, why do I have to get up to rinse the brushes out? You were right there!" Alicia said.

She finally did get up; and when she got back to hear easel she did not notice the painted proposal.

"I sat right in front of it, but I never looked up because I was trying to dry the brushes off. It still didn't click untill he got down on his knee and I'm like, 'Oh my God this is really happening,'" Alicia said. "...All these strangers and I'm about to look so ugly, because I was crying."

With all eyes on them, Alicia said yes and the place erupted in cheers.

"I was so glad it was over. I could finally breathe," Terrell said.

The now-married couple had a no-frills wedding one month later so they could save for a house.
