US-23 Closed After Truck Hits Overpass; 8 Mile Road Bridge Must Be Demolished
WHITMORE LAKE (WWJ) - Authorities say northbound US-23 along the Washtenaw-Livingston County line is closed indefinitely after a truck hit and overpass and became stuck, causing irreparable damage to the bridge.
The accident happened early Thursday morning at the 8 Mile Road overpass in Whitmore Lake.
The Michigan Department of Transportation said the bridge will need to be demolished before northbound US-23 can safely reopen -- meaning the freeway and the overpass will remain closed to traffic until further notice.
"MDOT is currently in the process of implementing an emergency contract to have that bridge removed," a statement said. "It is unclear at this time when northbound US-23 will reopen."
Spokesperson Kari Arend said the crash damaged critical beams that hold up the bridge.
"MDOT currently has inspectors on the scene now inspecting the bridge, assessing the damage," she said. "I know there was damage to the beams."
No injuries were reported in the crash.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area until further notice.
