Upton Voted Tiger Of The Year Despite Trade
DETROIT (AP) — Justin Upton was voted Tiger of the Year despite being traded by Detroit with a month remaining in the season.
Upton received 15 of 26 first-place votes from the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Nicholas Castellanos was second with seven votes, and Michael Fulmer and Ian Kinsler received two each.
Upton hit .279 with 28 home runs and 94 RBIs in 125 games for the Tigers before the outfielder was dealt to the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 31.
Detroit went 64-98 this season, finishing tied for the worst record in the major leagues. Along the way, the Tigers traded three of their top players — Upton, Justin Verlander and J.D. Martinez. Fulmer's solid season on the mound was halted in late August by an injury.
