Union Blames Gov. Snyder For Detroit Principal Who 'Terrorizes' Teachers
DETROIT (WWJ) -- About two dozen Detroit teachers protested outside Marquette Middle School calling for the school's principal to be dismissed on Monday.
The teachers claim that working conditions at the school are deplorable and that principal Christopher Lockhart has been verbally abusive and disruptive.
Steve Conn, president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, lays some of the blame on Governor Rick Snyder.
"This is completely uncalled for and it's got to end, and we're determined to make it end," Conn said. "An the EM (emergency manager) is responsible, there's no looking the other way -- the buck stops there. The Governor took over the schools, we're holding him responsible. Really he should get out of the schools because they're not doing anything good for Detroit."
Lockhart declined to comment on the allegations.
"Principals like Lockhart have no business in the schools, no business at all in the schools -- destroying education instead of helping it," Conn said. "He's trying to terrorize the teachers and make their lives miserable. No employee should have to put up with the kind of attack on the job that these teachers have seen."
Detroit Public Schools issued a statement saying it takes all concerns such as these seriously, and is currently reviewing the situation.
