U.S. Consumers Spend A Whopping $20 Billion For Mother's Day
DETROIT (WWJ) - When it comes to holiday spending, Mother's Day ranks second in the U.S. at nearly $20 billion.
University of Detroit-Mercy marketing professor Mike Bernacchi, says we take Mom out to eat, buy her jewelry, flowers, and gift cards.
"We're gonna spend money on that special outing: on the brunch, on the lunch, whatever it happens to be, $3.8 billion, with a b," Bernacchi told WWJ Newsradio 950's Beth Fisher. "Jewelry comes in at a close second at $3.6 billion; flowers at $2.3 billion."
Sometimes, Bernacchi said, mom's day comes in third.
"When the economy is doing fairly well, which it is now, we spend more on Mother's Day than we do on Valentine's Day. When the economy isn't doing so well, we seem to spend more on Valentine's Day than Mother's Day," Bernacchi said.
Bernacchi saidmost people spend $163 on their mom, on average, for Mother's Day.
Fifteen-year-0ld Jesse Damoth, who spent the day hanging out with her mom Carol at the Royal Oak in Bloom flower show, said that sounds like a lot.
"I think, I dunno, I like making thing for my mom, and spending time with (her)," Jesse told WWJ's Sandra McNeil. "I think it depends what you decide to do."
