Two Killed In Novi House Fire

NOVI (WWJ) - Authorities are trying to figure out what caused a house fire in Novi that killed two people.

Fire crews got the call around 7:30 a.m. Friday about a fire at a home on East Lake Drive, near Endwell and 13 Mile, and by the time they arrived on the scene, the home was engulfed with flames shooting out the windows and doors.

Crews were able to enter the home and made it to the second floor where they found 61-year-old Barbara Garner and her 66-year-old husband Kenneth Garner. Both were dead.

The Novi Fire Marshal is working with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Fire Investigations team as well as the Medical Examiner's Office to determine how the couple died. Officials are now saying they believe both died from smoke inhalation.

"The son of the two deceased victims said he had spoken to both of them last night and that he was almost sure they were in their room on the second floor," Novi Fire and EMS Director Jeffery Johnson said. "Our team found both victims on the second floor in their bedroom. We are not certain whether or not they had working smoke alarms. We don't exactly know what started the fire either."

Johnson added that it appears the fire began in the basement
